-IMPORTANT CAMP CULLEN UPDATE-

A fire broke out in Camp Cullen’s dining hall in the early morning hours of Monday, July 19^th. Thankfully no one was injured, but we are sad to report that the building was completely destroyed. With a loss like this, we feel strongly that we could not continue to offer a quality program that campers deserve so we were left with the tough choice to close Camp Cullen for the rest of the summer.

Our staff, volunteers and insurance company are working diligently to assess the damage and losses incurred. To give us adequate time to make the best possible decisions for the future, we have canceled any group events/activities planned for the months of August and September. We will announce our future plans for Camp Cullen sometime in early October 2010.

These decisions have been tough, but we are excited to get Camp Cullen on the road to recovery and offer a safe, welcoming environment where our campers can meet new friends and grow in spirit, mind and body. We appreciate all your prayers and emails. Thank you!

Registration for the Summer 2010 sessions at YMCA Camp Cullen has begun! Sign up early to make sure that you don't miss out! Session Photos

Pictures will be loaded each evening by our camp photographer, who will be walking around each day capturing campers having fun! We do our best to photograph each area of camp. Please understand that we do our best to get each camper, but many times that is difficult! Check in each day for new photos. They are listed by session and date.

YMCA Camp Cullen 460 Cullen Loop Suite A • Trinity, TX 75862 713.758.9275 • 936.594.2274 From Hwy 59 Take Hwy 59 to Livingston. Exit at Livingston/Huntsville. At the traffic light make a left onto Hwy 190 west. Take 190 west to Onalaska, approximately 13 miles. Go to third traffic light and make a right onto FM 356. Camp Cullen is 15 miles on the right. Pass under the entrance and follow signs to office. From I-45 Take I-45 north to exit 113 (Huntsville/Crockett). This exit will turn into Hwy 19 north. Follow Hwy 19 for approximately 22 miles to Trinity. Go to the second traffic light and make a right onto Hwy 94 east. Go over the railroad tracks and turn right at the flashing yellow caution light onto FM 356. Camp Cullen is 5 miles on the left. Pass under the entrance and follow signs to office.

Typical Staff Day

A typical day for our camp counselors is anything but typical! Most mornings, you awake with the kids and walk to raise the flag. Breakfast is served in our spacious dining facility. Then each counselor will take a group of kids to their morning activity where they will stay busy doing anything from our High Ropes Challenge Course to riding our tubes being pulled by the jet skis.

After a morning of activities, campers will gather as a group and head to lunch and then rest time which is when our you or your co-counselor will have a break to retreat to the staff lounge.

After rest period activities resume, you will spend the afternoon with your campers doing all sorts of fun camp activities....all which lead to lifelong memories of fun and friendships!

After dinner, the campers are gathered together to take part in our evening activities such as camp dance or water wars. After evening activity, our campers and counselors will gather for the evening devotional before they all part ways and each cabin sets off to take showers and call it a night!

It is a summer that you will not soon forget. You will make friends, enjoy the campers, and most importantly, make a difference in a camper's life.

The fantastic camp staff has always made both of my children feel important and special regardless of the fact that every year they would not be able to go without the continued help of the Open Doors Program. Chase has decided that as soon as he is old enough he wants to be a camp counselor during the summer before going to the Air Force Academy and during his summer break while attending the academy. Miranda is not quite as planned out yet but she just loves going to camp and meeting new friends. I am quite sure that we are not the only family that has benefited from these wonderful places and people, or that could not have been able to experience this without the help of scholarships. Our Camping Services Executive, Len Masengale I have been involved in YMCA camping since 1992, but camping has always been a big part of my life from my early childhood. The most important memories I have from boyhood are of the camping trips I went on. My lifelong friends are those I went camping with and the last memories I have of my father are of the camping trip we went on one week before he passed away. Camping has a way of sealing things into your character. Some of the things that helped shape my life were the things that happened while I was at camp....such as learning to live without the things I forgot to bring, friendships I made and the counselors that helped me through some hardships. All those things worked to form the person I am today. After working in camp for several years, I became Executive Director of YMCA Camp Hamman Ranch in 2001. I am currently the Camping Services Executive overseeing YMCA Camp Cullen. My goal is to make sure camp is a safe and...

Water Slide

All will agree that the Water Slide is truly a great addition for our campers. The water slide is 100' long coming off a 25' tower.

A 15' x 20' deck is at the base with a 75' walkway coming from the water and another one a little shorter that heads to a staging area where campers will prepare for the slide.

The slide can handle over 200 people per hour, so campers will get to ride the slide many times during their week at Cullen.

Water Skiing

Whether it be skiing, wakeboarding or kneeboarding, campers always enjoy the pull of the boat.

We are very excited about our skiing program. With the recent addition of the "Boom" on our Mastercraft ski boats, we are easily able to give each child the feeling of skiing or wakeboarding. For those that have already mastered getting up behind the boat on a rope, we utilize the skylon, a large pole reaching high above the boat to give a better pull for the skier.

With the ability to virtually guarantee success for our campers in whatever might be chosen to do, skiing brings out a whole new level of fun.

This is a great opportunity for a child to feel greatly challenged but to have relatively easy success, thus continuing to build self-confidence, self-worth and self-esteem.

Tubing

To ride the tube...

What a great time it is for our campers....challenging, intense and more fun than imaginable!

We connect two tubes with nylon covers to a small boat with a 70hp motor. The kids say, "Hit it!" and are off in a flash. With two tubes going at one time, it is more of a bumping contest as the tubes scoot across the water running into each other at the outside points of the wake. Back and forth they race with kids giggling, screaming and hanging on tight.

It easily ranks as one of the favorite things to do while at camp.
